Lineage & School of Heritage

As a child of eight or nine, Hong Fuqiang came to love the Miao drum through the constant influence of his grandparents, and under their guidance he learned to dance the Miao drum dance.

Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Male, Miao ethnicity, born in 1936 in Xiangxi, Hunan. In 2003 he took apart the techniques of the Miao martial art Bahe Quan (Eight Harmonies Boxing) one by one and derived more than fifty drum dance movements from them, creating the Bahe Drum, which combines martial-arts movements with highly demanding drumming skills. Later, on the basis of the traditional Miao drum dance and the Bahe Drum, he devised further new Miao drum routines, including the Auspicious Drum, the Ruyi Drum, the Unity Drum and the Tiepeng Drum, making an important contribution to the transmission and development of the Miao drum dance of Xiangxi.
