A representative bearer of Taijiquan (Chen-style Taijiquan), a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project; nineteenth-generation inheritor of Chen-style Taijiquan; national senior martial arts coach; first-grade referee; and dean of the Chenjiagou Martial Arts College. Wang Xian studied from childhood under the Chen-style Taijiquan masters Chen Zhaopi and Chen Zhaokui for more than twenty years, mastering the essence of Chen-style Taiji.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of Han ethnicity, born in 1944, a native of Wen County, Henan. His routine practice is open and composed, with spirit and form in full accord. He excels particularly in combat and in striking, throwing, and projecting techniques, and his boxing is swift, fierce, nimble, and crisp, with astonishing power. Beginning in 1983 he went abroad to teach Taijiquan, traveling to more than thirty countries and regions. He was the first person to bring Taijiquan to Japan and Europe, and he successively founded Taiji research and training centers bearing his name in China and abroad, while also serving as coach and consultant to Taijiquan organizations in the United States, France, Japan, and other countries.
Honors & Recognition
He began competing in 1972 and went on to win more than twenty national and Henan provincial championships in Taijiquan forms and push-hands. Wang Xian has published numerous monographs and video discs, including Chen-style Taijiquan Old Frame (Chen Shi Taijiquan Laojia) and Techniques of Chen-style Taijiquan Push-Hands (Chen Shi Taijiquan Tuishou Jifa). His works have been translated into French, English, and other languages. He has received the honorary title of International Taiji Master, and his disciples are found throughout the world, greatly advancing the development and growth of Chen-style Taijiquan.
