牛桂英自幼随民间私人晋剧班社演出，师从李庭柱，主工青衣，于20世纪30年代末正式登台。

牛桂英成名后受到京剧名家李子健的指点，逐渐形成了具有独特演唱风格的“牛派”表演艺术，其表演特点是行腔委婉、刚柔相济。

代表作品有：《三击掌》《打金枝》等。

女，汉族，1925年生，2013年去世，山西榆次人。

第二批国家级非物质文化遗产项目晋剧代表性传承人，一级演员。
