Li Wanlin
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of Han ethnicity, born in 1938 in Xingxian, Shanxi. Li Wanlin began studying zhonglu bangzi at fifteen and later switched to beilu bangzi. He learned chiefly from the singing method of Jiao Shengyu and afterwards absorbed the vocal characteristics of older artists such as Feng Jinquan, creating the wholly distinctive “Wanlin style.” In performance he attends to the unity of text and melody, letting feeling lead the voice and the voice carry feeling, thereby enriching the vocal art of beilu bangzi. His representative works include Long Ting (The Dragon Pavilion) and Xue Shou Yin (The Bloody Handprint).
