Li Shujian
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Han ethnicity, born in 1962 in Ruzhou, Henan. At seventeen Li Shujian entered the performance department of the Luoyang Municipal Opera School in Henan Province. In 1986 he studied the performing art and repertoire of Wang Ershun, founder of the Western Henan school of Yuju laosheng roles, and thoroughly absorbed the essence of Wang school art; he has since trained more than ten successors of that tradition. His acting has the backbone of the Qi school, and his voice carries the resonance of a dragon's chant and a phoenix's call, a tiger's roar and a lion's cry; he is acclaimed as the foremost laosheng of the contemporary Chinese opera stage. His representative works include Bian Da Lu Hua (Whipping the Reed Catkins), Da Deng Dian (Ascending the Hall) and Chen Ying Jiu Gu (Chen Ying Saves the Orphan).
