Li Jinquan
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Han ethnicity, born in 1920 in Beijing. He is a national representative bearer of Peking Opera, a second-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, a Peking Opera performing artist and a first-grade actor. At 12 Li Jinquan entered the Zhonghua Drama Vocational School to train, specializing in the laodan, or old woman, role under Wen Liangchen, Liu Junfeng, Shi Qingshan and others. In 1941 he took Li Duokui as his master and received his authentic transmission, which laid a solid foundation for inheriting and developing the art of laodan performance. Li Jinquan worked at the China National Peking Opera Company. He laid stress on letting emotion guide the singing and on using song to express feeling, so that his vocal delivery fused sound and sentiment, and his command of such techniques as articulation, enunciation, the closing of a tone and breath control was refined and exacting. His representative works include Diao Jin Gui (Angling for the Golden Turtle), Yu Hou Long Pao (Meeting the Empress Dowager and the Imperial Robe), Li Kui Tan Mu (Li Kui Visits His Mother) and the modern opera Bai Mao Nü (The White-Haired Girl).
