Feng Qingju
Lineage & School of Heritage
In 1960 Feng Qingju was admitted to the Tianjin Rongbaozhai. After the Tianjin Deyugong Painting Shop, the Tianjin Rongbaozhai, and the Yangliuqing New Year Painting Workshop were merged into the Tianjin Yangliuqing Painting Society, he studied under Zhang Xingze and Pan Zhongyi: the former excelled at bold and free work, while the latter was skilled at fine and detailed work. Feng Qingju organically fused the styles of his two masters, and he has inherited and admirably interpreted the Yangliuqing woodblock New Year pictures, which unite peasant painting, literati painting, and Western painting in one.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of the Han ethnic group, born in 1944 in Tianjin. He is a national representative bearer of Yangliuqing Woodblock New Year Pictures, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, and in 2005 he was appointed a researcher in folk art creation at the Chinese National Academy of Arts. He has also actively explored the use of color, developing techniques such as the water-brush wash, powder-face rendering, and powder brightening, which fully express the artistic charm of the piled gold and dripping powder of Yangliuqing New Year pictures. His works carry auspicious meanings and appeal to refined and popular tastes alike. To this day Feng Qingju has worked in color painting, creation, and teaching at the Tianjin Yangliuqing Painting Society, actively exploring a variety of New Year painting techniques. He has also broken with the old folk custom of keeping painting secrets within the workshop. From the preparation of door-picture panels and alum-treated walls to the mixing of pigments and the art of color painting, he has passed on every stage of the craft without reservation to younger New Year painting workers, transmitting the complete and orthodox techniques of New Year picture production down to the present day.
