Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Han ethnicity, born in 1931 in Tangshan, Hebei. Sun Zhengyang has made a very important contribution to the chou (comic) role type of Peking Opera. Drawing on his own performing style, he boldly broke new ground in the acting of chou roles, giving full and uninhibited expression to his talent in such plays as Shi Ba Che (Eighteen Quarrels). He is accomplished in both civil and martial roles, with a crisp, bright voice and brisk, lucid recitation; he excels at portraying a character's inner life, and his humour is elegant rather than coarse, earning him the reputation of the finest chou actor south of the Yangtze.
