Chen Jiansheng
Lineage & School of Heritage
Chen Jiansheng was captivated by Cantonese opera from childhood and began studying it while still at school. Initial training was with Tan Shanshan; thereafter study continued alongside performance, with successive instruction from Ma Yuqi, Zhu Qingxiang, Ye Shaolan, Wang Xiaoling, Lu Shi and Xu Junhan. After years of assiduous study, Chen became an outstanding female civil-and-martial male role (wenwu sheng) performer in Cantonese opera, and was later taken as a disciple by the philanthropist and virtuoso Xin Ma Shizeng, who recognized the talent and transmitted the art in person, enabling still greater achievements in Cantonese opera.
