Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Female, Han ethnicity, born in 1927, a native of Kaiping, Guangdong. Hongxiannv began her performing career in Macao in 1938, joining a troupe together with her aunt He Fulian. Over more than seventy years in the art she drew widely on the strengths of many schools while building on tradition, and, adapting these to her own gifts, created the Hong school of Cantonese opera art. A body of representative works such as The Willful Princess and the Simple-Minded Prince Consort (Diao Man Gongzhu Han Fuma), Picking Up the Jade Bracelet (Shi Yu Zhuo), Searching the Academy (Sou Shu Yuan) and Storm over the Mountain Village (Shan Xiang Feng Yun) proved engrossing and is still performed to this day without decline. Her performance is gracious and noble, dignified and generous, suffused with heroic spirit yet soft without and firm within, while her singing is beautiful and moving, stirring the heart.
