Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Han ethnicity, born in 1922 in Wuhan, Hubei Province. Xiong Jianxiao served successively as an actor in the Second Team of the Wenyi Chu Opera Anti-Enemy Propaganda Troupe and as deputy head of the Wuhan Chu Opera No. 1 Troupe, the Wuhan Chu Opera Troupe, and the Hubei Provincial Chu Opera Troupe. His acting was restrained and finely nuanced, with precise diction; he ingeniously combined colloquial speech (renhua) with rhymed declamation (yunbai), fusing the two into a natural, fluent manner that became a style of his own. The characters he portrayed were rich in the flavor of everyday life without lapsing into naturalism. His representative works include Ge Ma, Yang Ban Qiu Qin (Yang Ban Proposes Marriage), and Jiu Xianggong Nao Guan (The Ninth Young Master Raises a Ruckus in the Hall).
