Kang He
Lineage & School of Heritage
Kang He was fond of Huating Quzi Opera singing from childhood and, as a youth, became a pupil of Kang Baoshan, a first-generation Quzi Opera artist, which makes him a second-generation transmitter of the genre.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
He has farmed as his main occupation while taking up the study, performance and transmission of Quzi Opera in the slack farming seasons, and he continues to do so today. Over a performing career of nearly half a century, through diligent and painstaking study, he gradually formed a distinctive singing style of his own: his voice is sweet and finely shaded, his diction round and his tones true, his singing supple, his performance emotionally rich, his expression natural and his characterization lifelike, with practised and well-placed stage movement. He is most accomplished in playing dan (female) roles. His representative works include Two Herdboys (Shuang Fangniu) and Plum Brings Snow (Mei Jiangxue).
