He Xun
Lineage & School of Heritage
He Xun was born into a Dongba family as the sixth-generation inheritor of the family tradition, and his Dongba painting was handed down to him from his father, the senior Dongba He Er.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Among the Naxi people, anyone who can be called a 'Dongba' must possess a comprehensive command of Dongba culture and be able to transmit it as an integrated whole. Painting was an essential requirement for a Dongba. He presided over hundreds upon hundreds of sacrificial ceremonies, and each ceremony required him to paint a set of Dongba paintings, so his painting ability and expressive technique steadily improved. The subjects he depicted were chiefly deities and Buddhas of every kind, animals and plants, demons and monsters, and various ritual implements, all images that the Naxi people worship and offer sacrifices to. In his advanced years He Xun painted only rarely, yet he continued to take on and teach disciples.
