Lineage & School of Heritage

A national representative bearer of Tibetan Thangka (Mentang school), a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project; lecturer in the Art Department of Tibet University; and a master of Chinese arts and crafts. In 1989 he was appointed as a teacher of Tibetan fine arts in the Art Department of Tibet University, and is able to paint all kinds of thangkas and murals independently.

Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Male, of Tibetan ethnicity, born in 1958, a native of Tibet. From 1971 to 1974 he took part in the mural restoration project at the Jokhang Temple (Dazhao Si), while at the same time studying under numerous experts in traditional Tibetan painting, learning the techniques of restoring and painting ancient Tibetan murals, the methods of preparing Tibetan painting pigments, and the traditional arts and crafts techniques of the Tibetan people. In 1981 he was admitted to the undergraduate class in fine arts of the Department of Literature and Education at Tibet Normal College, but was later forced to leave school for personal reasons. From 1983 onward he received the meticulous guidance of Professor Danbaraodan, under whom he systematically studied traditional Tibetan artistic techniques as well as art history and theory. He places particular emphasis on the use of line; his tonalities are lively and richly varied. His representative works include Guanyin of the Lotus Net (Lianhua Wangmu Guanyin), Dharmapala (Hufa Shen), and the Mandala of the Eight Auspicious Symbols (Bajixiang Tancheng).
