Huang Chaobin
Lineage & School of Heritage
In 1953 he went to Guangxi to study under established masters, absorbing the techniques of northern Zhuang opera and developing the performance art of Buyi opera. After returning home he taught Buyi opera throughout the Naiyan River valley, so that Buyi opera in that area still preserves the artistic tradition of performing costume drama; from 1960 he has served as master of the Naiyan Buyi opera troupe.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Huang Chaobin began studying under the eighth-generation opera masters in 1934. He became thoroughly versed in the roles of young female lead (xiaodan), young male lead (xiaosheng), civil official and martial combat, and he had a firm command of the erhu, the accompanying instrument of Buyi opera.
Honors & Recognition
He was born in 1926 into the Buyi ethnic group in Ceheng, Guizhou, and died in 2008. He is a national representative bearer of Buyi Opera, a second-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. He led the troupe and directed and rehearsed more than ten plays, including Wu Xianwang Revels in the Lantern Festival (Wu Xianwang Nao Huadeng) and Zhuan Lu Diao; these were presented many times at artistic exchanges organised by the state, the province and the municipality, and he trained successors as ninth- and tenth-generation masters of Buyi Guyi costume opera.
