Xie Yaowen
Lineage & School of Heritage
In 1957 Xie Yaowen entered the Xupu County Chenhe Opera Troupe as a student and took Yang Shiji as his master. He first studied laosheng, the older male roles, and later switched to xiaosheng, the young male roles. He made his formal stage debut in 1959 and soon became a leading actor of the troupe; in 1989 he took part in the filmed performance of Chinese Chenhe Mulian Opera, sponsored and carried out with funding from the International Fund for the Promotion of Culture of UNESCO.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
He was born in 1941 into the Han ethnic group in Xupu, Hunan. He excels in singing and was deeply influenced in his vocal style by Shu Luocheng. Adept at drawing on the distinctive features of the high-pitched gaoqiang musical idiom to create tragic characters, he has won wide acclaim from audiences; in such works as Mulian, The Golden Seal, The Thorn Hairpin and The Story of the Lute his singing is melodious and richly expressive, leaving a deep impression on spectators.
Honors & Recognition
He is a national representative bearer of Mulian Opera (Chenhe Mulian Opera), a second-batch national intangible cultural heritage project.
