Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

He was born in 1934 into the Han ethnic group in Nanle, Henan. In 1947 He Shuge became a disciple of the Mulian opera artist Su Shangzhi and learned the arias and movements of such roles as the Little Ghost, the Earth God and the King of Hell. From 1962 he began playing Lady Liu in Mulian opera, and at the same time he mastered the arias, dialogue and performance technique of every role in the play. He carried on the traditional style of performance: his movements are bold and unconstrained, his singing free and natural, and his voice powerful, so that Nanle Mulian opera still preserves its ancient performing character to this day.

Honors & Recognition

He is a national representative bearer of Mulian Opera (Nanle Mulian Opera), a second-batch national intangible cultural heritage project.
