Lineage & School of Heritage

Li Shiwei was apprenticed at sixteen and at twenty-four joined the Xiaoyi Shadow Puppet and Puppet Theatre Troupe, studying puppet making, shadow puppet carving and design under Hou Guangyuan. In the 1960s he also studied under the master shadow puppet carver He Derun.

Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Male, Han ethnic group, born in 1947 in Jiexiu, Shanxi. He created the modelling and fabrication for the shadow puppet plays Zhang Yu Zhu Hai (Zhang Yu Boils the Sea), Liu Yi Chuan Qi (The Legend of Liu Yi) and Liang Peng You (Two Friends), among others; Zhang Yu Zhu Hai was performed at the first China Folk Art Festival and well received.

A representative bearer of Shadow Puppetry (Xiaoyi shadow puppetry), a second-batch national intangible cultural heritage project.
