张喜民13岁拜本村张尚坤等老艺人为师学艺，14岁登台演出，1980年成立了自己的班社“喜民班”，几十年来一直活跃在秦晋豫一带，并逐步形成了自己独特的老腔艺术风格，是目前华阴老腔皮影的中坚力量。

现有徒弟三十余人，主要代表作品有《访永宁》等。
