Lineage & School of Heritage

Li Bofen began learning the craft at the age of eleven from his father Li Rongzong and received systematic training from childhood. He mastered finger technique, wrist technique and waist-and-leg technique, and was familiar with the basic movements of the sheng, dan and chou role types. In plays such as Shi Jiu Nong and Fan Po Nong he could perform two characters at once on his own, rendering each figure with subtle precision. In 1961 he took part in the puppet and shadow play showcase organised by the Ministry of Culture and was well received; in 1962 Qian Lanfang Takes a Substitute Bride, performed jointly with his father Li Rongzong, was made into a documentary by the Central Newsreel and Documentary Film Studio. In 1982 he was awarded the title of National Advanced Cultural Worker.
