Wang Hongmin
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of the Han ethnic group, born in 1968 in Heyang, Shaanxi. Wang Hongmin was born into a family of string-puppet performers and is a grandson of the celebrated artist Wang Zhongxu. In 1982 he was admitted to the Heyang County Marionette Troupe, where he specialised in manipulation and in chou (clown) and hualian (painted-face) roles. He has innovated in the marionettes themselves and developed a distinctive performing style. His singing shifts with the needs of the plot among high-pitched, impassioned, stirring and sorrowful vocal colours in order to convey the inner feelings of different characters, while techniques of lifting, hooking, plucking, flicking, flashing and swaying allow the puppets to perform complex movements and difficult feats, so that the figures come vividly to life and win warm praise from audiences. His representative works include The Bald Man Teases the Bridal Chamber (Tuzi Nao Fang), Selling Sundries (Mai Zahuo) and Zhu Bajie Carries His Bride (Zhu Bajie Bei Xifu).
