Xiao Pengfang
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Also known as Xiao Pengfang, female, of the Han ethnic group, born in 1969 in Heyang, Shaanxi. Xiao Pengfang was born into a family of string-puppet performers and is a granddaughter of the celebrated artist Xiao Xufa. In 1982 she was admitted to the Heyang County Marionette Troupe, where she specialised in manipulation and in zhengdan (young female), laodan (old female) and xiaosheng (young male) roles. While inheriting her family's art she has continued to study and draw on the performing characteristics of other theatrical genres, innovating in the marionettes and forming a distinctive style of her own. Her voice is round and softly evocative, and the puppets she manipulates are vivid and lifelike, capable of complex movements and feats. Her representative works include Selling Sundries (Mai Zahuo) and Striking the Golden Branch (Da Jinzhi).
