In 1963 he studied storytelling under the folk artist Zhang Jungong. In 1975 he entered the Ansai County propaganda troupe, and in 1981 he became head of the quyi troupe, a post he holds to this day.

Male, Han ethnicity, born in 1951 in Ansai, Shaanxi. His performing technique is distinctive, his language concise, his singing smooth and his performance finely detailed, with lifelike characterization; he is especially accomplished in the music of Northern Shaanxi storytelling and was the first to tune the strings in the danyin (single-tone) mode of that tradition. His representative works include Yi Pan La Rou (A Plate of Cured Meat).
