Liu Zhengcheng
Lineage & School of Heritage
From the age of fifteen he studied under Liu Bingzhong, a second-generation transmitter of the Zhuang gewei, and at twenty he formally became a song master.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Zhuang ethnic group, born in 1935 in Yongning, Guangxi. Liu Zhengcheng grew up in a homeland of mountain songs; at festivals, celebrations and weddings, all that he saw and heard was the antiphonal singing of mountain songs by the song masters of the older generation. Able both to compose and to sing, Liu Zhengcheng excelled at drawing feeling from the scene before him and singing impromptu; his artistic expression was graceful and accomplished, and he had completely mastered the singing techniques of the Zhuang gewei. His successors are already able to perform on stage, though their skill in composing songs still requires further training. His representative works include Wei Qing Bu Pa Shui Wu Shen (Fearless of Deep Waters for Love) and Yan Kan Feng Fei Liu Kong Wo (Watching the Phoenix Fly Away, Leaving an Empty Nest), among others.
