Wang Xiyu
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
A singer of Wu Songs. He learned to sing mountain songs from an early age and in 1934 took an old singer of his village as his teacher, learning to sing while working, and became a fairly well-known field-song singer in the area. His wife was also an excellent field-song singer; at weeding and harrowing time the couple often went together to sing field mountain songs in competition with the young people of the village, and they were outstanding among the folk singers of the surrounding countryside. In 1953 the Zhaoxiang Township field-song team headed by him was invited to Beijing to sing and was received by Party and state leaders. His representative works include Wu Guniang (Fifth Daughter), Shi Er Yue Hua Ming (Flower Names of the Twelve Months) and Zuo Changnian (Serving as a Hired Hand).
