Aixinjueluo Qingkai
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
A storyteller of Manchu folk tales. He grew up from childhood in the cultural atmosphere of jianggu, the Manchu custom of telling old tales, and by the age of seven or eight he loved listening to and telling stories; most of his stories came from the elders of his family, and his storytelling activity continued for more than sixty years. When telling stories he used Chinese as the main language, interspersed with Manchu. His language was witty and humorous, and he could often make a plain and unremarkable plot thoroughly entertaining. His repertoire totals nearly three hundred tales, chiefly legends reflecting the Manchu ancestors and stories of Manchu popular customs, such as Nurhaci's Flight and Digging Ginseng. He liked allegorical and admonitory satirical stories best, and his specialities included The Sage's Sorrow and The Rich Young Master as Interpreter.
