Han Yunde
Lineage & School of Heritage
Fond of folk songs from childhood, he studied under the veteran local folk singers Lu Banren and Ren Mazi; after graduating from a normal school he worked successively at the Hequ Opera Troupe, the Errentai Opera Troupe and the county museum.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
From the 1960s he began collecting and collating folk songs himself, and later, having gradually studied music theory, turned to composing folk songs; to date he has composed more than one thousand. In his view a good folk song should be marked by a clear theme, a pronounced flavour and sincere feeling; the flavour of a folk song should make flexible use of appoggiaturas before and after the note, upward and downward glissandi and falsetto, while attention must also be paid to the arrangement of the lyrics, the articulation of words and the emotional approach. Many of the folk songs he composed have been included in the music textbooks of art colleges, and he was often invited to give lectures and teach at universities in various places, teaching students of professional colleges and visitors to sing Hequ folk songs.
