Peng Side
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Han, born in September 1931, a native of Xingshan County, Hubei Province. At the age of nine he began learning Xingshan folk songs, weeding-and-hoe drumming and other singing skills from his father Peng Zuguan; he belongs to the lineage of mendi shi, disciples taught directly by their elders within a family tradition. His singing is rich in melody and wide in subject matter, and he is especially accomplished in the Great Turning Over (also called the slow tune) of weeding-and-hoe drumming; a well-known local song master who combines drumming, recitation and singing, he is described by local people as one who can sing for three days and three nights without repeating a line. He was invited by the China Conservatory of Music to perform at the Chinese Traditional Music Festival.
