Duxiulan
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Female, Yugur, born in June 1943, a native of Sunan Yugur Autonomous County, Gansu Province. From 1949 she learned folk songs, folk tales, ballads and proverbs from her parents, and later learned such wedding songs as the Song of Marriage. She has a thorough command of the Western Yugur language and a rough knowledge of Eastern Yugur; her tales, folk songs and proverbs contain very few Chinese loanwords, are delivered entirely in Yugur, and preserve many Turkic words. She can sing in full such Western Yugur folk songs, epics and folk tales as Sarimak, the Song of Marriage and Laili Lamao. She sings such Eastern Yugur folk songs as Bater Saihan, Hait (Dragon Head) Saihan, Grey Colt, Old White Horse, Zandan Tree and Jet-black Steed, and can explain the meaning of the archaic words in them.
