Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Male, of Han ethnicity, born in 1922, a native of Chaozhou, Guangdong Province. He was a national representative bearer of Guangdong Embroidery (Chao Embroidery), a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, and a Master of Chinese Arts and Crafts. From the age of twelve Lin Zhicheng served as an apprentice at the Taisheng Embroidery Shop in Chaozhou; he later moved to the Xu Bingfeng Embroidery Shop, where he worked as a designer of Chao embroidery. After the public-private mergers of the 1950s he entered the Chaozhou Chao Embroidery Factory, serving as director of its design office and later as technical director. Employing the techniques of padding, piecing, applique, and folding, together with boldly contrasting colors and incorporating gold-velvet embroidery, he produced works that are splendid and richly three-dimensional. He also absorbed techniques from Suzhou embroidery and, combining them with the distinctive features of Chao embroidery, created double-sided three-dimensional Chao embroidery artworks such as Yutang Fugui (Wealth and Honor in the Jade Hall). Drawing on his decades of practice in Chao embroidery, he also codified 250 stitch techniques and embroidered stitch-pattern samples for the reference of later generations. Lin Zhicheng passed on the entire accumulation of his life's work to the young embroiderers of the factory and to his own children. His representative works include Danfeng Chaoyang (Red Phoenix Facing the Sun), Changbanpo (The Slope of Changban), and Jie Da Huanxi (Everybody Happy), among others.
