Lineage & School of Heritage
At the age of ten he became a pupil of the senior song masters of his village, learning to sing Dong songs and to perform Dong opera; at fifteen he appeared on stage in Dong opera and had mastered more than two thousand traditional Dong song items; by twenty-five he had independently mastered the traditional Dong opera repertoire his teacher had passed on and could lead a troupe on tours to other places; at twenty-eight he began composing Dong songs and Dong opera.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
He composed the Dong songs Lai A Xi and Dang de zhengce wei Dongjia (Party Policy for the Dong People), and the Dong operas Buji Naiji, Buguan de Gushi (The Story of Buguan) and Xue Dazhai. After the reform and opening-up he also created Penglang Ganmei and Chuzhong bu biye, dagong bu hege (No Middle School Diploma, No Qualified Job), all of which were warmly received and praised by audiences. Over his lifetime he composed twenty-seven traditional Dong operas and more than three hundred newly written Dong songs; some of these works are still sung and performed in Dong villages and are deeply loved by the local Dong people.
Honors & Recognition
Male, of Dong ethnicity, born in April 1931 in Congjiang County, Guizhou Province, and died in February 2016. National representative bearer of the Grand Song of the Dong Ethnic Group, a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project.
