Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Female, of Han ethnicity, born in 1945, a native of Chengdu, Sichuan Province. She is a national representative bearer of Sichuan Embroidery, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, a Master of Chinese Arts and Crafts, and a recipient of the special government allowance of the State Council. In 1959 Hao Shuping entered the Sichuan embroidery class of the Chengdu Arts and Crafts Technical School, where, under the patient instruction of her teacher Peng Yongxing, she gradually mastered stitch techniques for human figures, for flowers, birds, and animals, and the fine-grain stitch for landscapes; she became especially skilled at embroidering figures. In order to improve her skill, she also modestly sought instruction from renowned local painters and calligraphers, learning from their creative approach of close observation and emphasis on sketching from life. She has mastered more than one hundred Sichuan embroidery stitch techniques, and she brings the defining qualities of the art fully to bear in her work: smooth and lustrous silk threads, even stitches, rigorous needlework, softly blended colors, effortless turning and twisting, vigorous vitality, and a felicitous balance of solidity and void, so that her pieces are rich in texture and vivid in spirit. Building on the stitch techniques of Sichuan embroidery, she innovated the Pingshou Lahua (flat-hand drawn-flower) stitch. She has traveled abroad on many occasions to give live demonstrations of Sichuan embroidery, and her works have been collected by museums overseas. Her representative works include Zhaojun Chusai (Wang Zhaojun Beyond the Great Wall), Wenjun Tingqin (Wenjun Listening to the Zither), Shuangmian Furong Liyu (Double-sided Hibiscus and Carp), and Shinü Xiongmao (Lady and Panda), among others.

Honors & Recognition

In training the younger generation of embroiderers, she placed primary emphasis on hands-on embroidery practice, supplemented by theoretical knowledge and a grounding in drawing, and she required young people to break through boldly and to innovate.
