Tang Kaixuan
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
He served as artistic adviser to the Guangdong Music and Folk Art Troupe, adviser to the yangqin committee of the Chinese Folk Orchestra Society, and a council member of the Guangdong Musicians' Association. He studied Guangdong music from childhood and in 1961 was admitted to the Guangdong Music and Folk Art Troupe, where in addition to formal tuition he received personal instruction from the celebrated Guangdong music performers Liu Tianyi, Zhu Hai, Liang Qiu and Chen Pingjia. Over nearly fifty years of Guangdong music yangqin performance he promoted a mixed bamboo technique that put an end to the dispute between left- and right-hand bamboo methods in Guangdong yangqin playing, and he devised a new technique of continuous plucked tremolo. In performance and composition he was careful to preserve the character of Guangdong music while making new experiments in scoring and instrumentation, for example adapting Rain on the Banana Leaves (Yu Da Bajiao) as a solo piece for yangqin, which won full recognition in folk music circles.
