Zhang Yangmolan
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
He is a man of the Han ethnic group, born in July 1969 in Wutai County, Shanxi Province. At the age of thirteen he was drawn to the Buddhist faith and entered Pusading Temple on Mount Wutai, where he took Gesang Danzeng as his master and learned the melodic models of Yellow Temple music and the technique of instrumental performance. During that period he carried his sheng and guan with him wherever he went, constantly correcting and restoring the music, and with single-minded dedication he organized the complete Buddhist music and melodic models of the Tibetan Buddhist Vajra Dance, recovering as well a number of temple pieces with a distinctive folk-music character, and in this way contributing to cultural exchange between Han and Tibetan traditions. After many years of study and practice in Buddhist music he now performs with ease more than forty melodic models from the sections Chan Qu Song Jing (Chan Melodies and Sutra Chanting), Chui Qiang and Yi Shi Yong Qu (Music for Rituals), such as Dian Dong Yi Le Mian, Peng Cuo Dian Lian, Guo Gong Da Dan, Ge Dan Er Ma Yi, Ning Ge Er Ma, Jia Wei Jin Ku and Wu Gong Yang.
