Chen Qianjun
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Miao ethnicity, born in October 1943, a native of Jishou City, Hunan Province. From childhood he followed his parents, his elder brother and sister-in-law, and his fellow villagers up the slopes and into the fields, and was steeped in the plain, unadorned Miao songs; at the age of 13 he first stepped on stage to sing. For many years he has persisted in immersing himself in everyday life, actively collecting outstanding folk ballads, proverbs, stories, and jokes of every kind, drawing nourishment from folk song and then refining it and taking its essence to form a style of his own; the folk songs he composed are widely sung and have exerted a certain influence in the locality. He has also taken an active part in the performance, training, and collection and collation of Miao folk songs.
