Dai Bisheng
Lineage & School of Heritage
At the age of 11 he studied the singing of Huayao wuwa mountain songs under the folk singer Chen Shida.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Han ethnicity, born in December 1949, a native of Longhui County, Hunan Province. In 2001 he was selected for the folk performance troupe of Huxingshan Yao Ethnic Township. Building on what he inherited from his predecessors, he has dared to innovate, bringing the high-register character of Huayao wuwa mountain songs to its utmost. In singing he excels at combining true and falsified voice, with free melody and rhythm, a high, bright, and resonant voice, and drawn-out yet urgent flourishes that now flow like drifting clouds and running water and now carry the force of a rainbow across the sky. In his handling of the lyrics he is adept at direct statement, metaphor, associative opening, hyperbole, antithesis, parallelism, repetition, and question-and-answer forms. He has a distinctive approach to the treatment of rhyme.
