She loved folk songs from childhood; at the age of 10 she began learning them from her father's younger cousin Wang Renfu, and by the age of 14 she was already somewhat renowned in the locality. She has always eagerly learned from local folk singers, mastering more than thirty song tunes and committing over a thousand folk songs to memory. She is able to fit new words to existing tunes, composing and singing Li folk songs on the spot according to different occasions. From the 1950s to the early 1960s she composed more than ten widely loved new Li folk songs, including Jiao Nong Chang Ge Nong Jiu Chang (If You Ask Me to Sing, I Sing) and You Ge Bu Chang Liu Zuo Mie (What Is a Song Kept Unsung For).
Honors & Recognition
Female, Li ethnicity, born in December 1923, died in April 2018, a native of Qiongzhong Li and Miao Autonomous County, Hainan Province. National representative bearer of Li Folk Songs (Qiongzhong Li Folk Songs), a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. She trained Li folk singers renowned throughout Hainan, such as Da Yumei and Xiao Yumei. Since the beginning of reform and opening up she has also trained a number of provincial- and county-level folk song bearers, including Wang Qurong and Wang Yuying. In 2007 she was awarded the title Outstanding Bearer of Chinese Folk Culture by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles.
