He Meiying
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Female, of Han ethnicity, born in 1934, a native of Qingyang, Gansu Province. He Meiying began learning embroidery from her mother at the age of seven or eight; by the age of thirteen or fourteen she had already achieved superb mastery of needlework, and the style of her work was highly distinctive. Her sachets are exquisitely made, with fine and varied stitches, brilliant colors, and distinctive forms; moreover, the embroidery silk she uses is entirely drawn from natural cocoons and then twisted and dyed, a highly exacting process. In her expressive approach she combines the folk tradition of sachet embroidery with the wash techniques of Chinese painting, so that her work appeals to both refined and popular tastes. He Meiying's daughter Ji Qing inherited her mother's craft and, building on that foundation, has continually carried the Qingyang sachet to deeper levels of development. Her representative works include Mudan Baishou Tu (Peonies with the Hundred Longevity Motif), Kaiping Kongque (Peacock Spreading Its Tail), and Meizhu Tu (Plum and Bamboo), among others.
