An Baolong
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Hui ethnicity, born in July 1952, a native of Menyuan Hui Autonomous County, Qinghai Province. He has been ardently fond of Hui banquet songs since childhood; at the age of twelve or thirteen he began learning to sing them from elderly folk artists, and by dint of diligent study and natural gift he mastered a large body of lyrics and tunes. He spent more than thirty years uncovering, collecting, and collating over one hundred types and more than two hundred banquet songs, composed works such as The White Parrot and Wife and Children Return, and creatively inherited and carried forward the Hui banquet song. In September 2007 he was invited to perform at the Shanghai World Expo and was well received. His singing is limpid and drawn-out, graceful and melodious, with crisp enunciation and full expression, while his dance movements are humorous, unrestrained, and buoyant. He teaches his children and grandchildren to sing Hui banquet songs, has formed a performing troupe, and performs regularly.
