Li Manshan
Lineage & School of Heritage
From childhood he learned the craft with his father, Li Qing; he belongs to the "Yingmen shi" tradition as a drum master and also acts as lead cantor in performance. His family has maintained an altar for six generations in the Zhengyi school, he is the seventh-generation transmitter, and he is now head of the Hengshan Daoist music ensemble. For many years he has eagerly trained successors while pressing ahead with organising musical scores, standardising the Yanggao Daoist repertoire, writing related treatises, and drawing more people to notice and study Daoist music.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, Han ethnicity, born in January 1946, a native of Yanggao County, Shanxi Province. Inheriting the family calling and developing Daoist music, he has transcribed the gongche notation left by his forebears into numbered notation and, in response to the needs of social development, has added modern pieces to the performing repertoire; his technique is richly varied and gives a refreshing impression.
Honors & Recognition
A national representative bearer of Daoist Music (Hengshan Daoist Music), a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. The ensemble is active in villages and towns throughout the year, and the zantan chants and suites it performs are highly praised by the public and attract wide social attention.
