Zhang Minggui
Lineage & School of Heritage
At the age of eleven he entered the religious life as a disciple of Zhang Yuantong, fourteenth-generation transmitter of the temple, and in 1980 he took charge of Daoist affairs at Baiyun Mountain; he is a renowned Daoist priest in the northwest.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
His religious name was Xixianzi. He was a man of Han ethnicity, born in March 1931 in Jia County, Shaanxi Province. He was a fifteenth-generation Daoist priest of Baiyun Mountain. He was thoroughly proficient in both the wind instruments and the percussion instruments used to perform Daoist music. While inheriting traditional Daoist music he absorbed the essence of Buddhist music, Jin opera, suona music and northern Shaanxi folk songs, thereby enriching the artistic expressiveness of Baiyun Mountain Daoist music. The Baiyun Mountain Daoist music he performed was at once archaic and elegant, solemn and dignified, while also possessing the mellifluous, refined and fresh style of Jiangnan music. In 1996, at the invitation of the British Daoist Association, he travelled to London, Edinburgh and other places to expound Daoist teachings and engage in exchange.
Honors & Recognition
He was a national representative bearer of Daoist Music (Baiyun Mountain Daoist Music), a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. Since taking charge of Daoist affairs at Baiyun Mountain he has repaired the temples, rescued and organised material relating to Daoist music, and taught Daoist ritual and Daoist music indefatigably, training outstanding disciples such as Ren Zhixiao, Zhang Zhipeng and Cao Zhizhong.
