Yao Daxin
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
He was a man of Han ethnicity, born in July 1967 in Jiyang County, Shandong Province. Born into a family long devoted to guzi yangge, he absorbed the tradition from childhood and learned the various movements of the dance from an early age. His santou (umbrella head) figure is costumed as an old man in a long gown, with a beard flowing over his chest, holding an umbrella in one hand and a cloth in the other; his expression is kindly and serene, his steps steady and composed, his movements relaxed and assured, and the performance highly watchable. He has been invited many times to take part in folk art performances in China and abroad in the course of cultural exchange.
Honors & Recognition
He is a national representative bearer of Yangge (Jiyang Guzi Yangge), a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. In 2005 he led a team to the Seventh China Folk Literature and Art Shanhua Awards, organised by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and the China Folk Literature and Art Association, and won the Folk Art Performance Award. He has consistently devoted himself to training new performers of guzi yangge, carefully passing its techniques on to his students.
