Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
He was a man of Han ethnicity, born in February 1939 in Quzhou County, Hebei Province. A passionate lover of folk culture from childhood, he began learning dragon dance at the age of twelve, took the dragon-head position in performance at seventeen, and started learning to make dragon lanterns at twenty-one. He has continually studied and refined both the crafting of dragon lanterns and the techniques of dragon dance, introducing innovations of his own. Every year, in the slack farming season or on festivals and holidays, he organises training and performances in dragon-lantern making and dragon-dance technique. Since 2005 he has repeatedly led the dragon-lantern performance team of Dongjie Village to large-scale events such as the Chinese Dragon Culture Festival, Culture and Art Week and the Central Plains Folk Art Festival, winning high praise from all quarters of society. He actively organises training classes, passing on the skills of dragon-lantern making and performance, and has trained a large number of successors in the craft.
