Fei Tugen
Lineage & School of Heritage
In the 1970s he studied under Sun Yuexian, a transmitter of the grass dragon, learning to make the props used in the grass-dragon dance, the water-creature dance and the rolling-lantern dance.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
He was a man of Han ethnicity, born in January 1947 in Shanghai. He learned bamboo weaving in childhood and can make farm implements such as bamboo baskets, bamboo crates and bamboo trays. In 1987 he joined the rolling-lantern and grass-dragon production team organised by the Yexie Cultural Station. For twenty years he has taken part in designing and making rolling lanterns and grass dragons, improving the craft so that the props meet the requirements of the various dances. He has a comprehensive command of the whole procedure of the grass-dragon dance, including its dragon-worship ritual, and takes on apprentices, exercising considerable influence in the surrounding townships.
