Yin Shaoshan
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
He was a man of Han ethnicity, born in January 1960 in Cang County, Hebei Province. He learned lion dance in his village troupe from childhood and performed with it during the slack farming season. In 1991 he became head of the Cang County Liuji Lion Dance Troupe. Drawing on the finest elements of traditional lion dance and integrating acrobatics with martial arts, he created some twenty highly demanding movements, among them the three-dimensional straight spin, teasing from a chair, the stacked lion's display of power and descending the mountain in search of treasure, and he deliberately strengthened the rhythm and force of the percussion so as to give full expression to the majesty and vigour of the northern lion, establishing the distinctive Liuji lion-dance style. He has led the Cang County Liuji Lion Dance Troupe in competitions of every kind and in large-scale charitable performances, carrying Cang County lion dance to every part of the country and abroad. In 2007 he established the Cang County Lion Dance Training Institute, which trains students throughout the year.
