Lineage & School of Heritage
At the age of sixteen, Wang Yunxiu apprenticed under the renowned jade-carving masters He Desheng and Fei Yongxiang, from whom he acquired a set of consummate skills, and he went on to become the fourth-generation representative bearer of the plain-style (suhuo) technique of Xiuyan jade carving.
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of Manchu ethnicity, born in 1957 in Xiuyan Manchu Autonomous County, Liaoning Province. After the Xiuyan County jade-carving factory went bankrupt in 1993, he founded the Youlian Jade Carving Factory on his own, dedicated to plain-style Xiuyan jade carving, in order to keep this craft alive; he has taught its skills tirelessly, and the craftsmanship of his apprentices is now approaching maturity. Wang Yunxiu reproduces ancient vessels such as tripods, bottles, ding cauldrons, and xun incense burners from before the Qin and Han dynasties; his works are balanced, steady, well-proportioned, mellow, and smooth, with ornamentation that is plain, elegant, and magnificent. Technically, he works mainly in relief, combined with round carving and openwork piercing, as well as the inner carving known as the 'signature skill' (juehuo), all of which embody traditional Chinese aesthetic ideals. Representative works include Qinian Dian (Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests), Tianji Zun (Celestial Rooster Vessel), and Taiping You Xiang (Peace and Auspicious Omens) incense vessel, among others.
