Lu Jinqiao
Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
National representative bearer of Quyang Stone Carving, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project, and a master of Chinese arts and crafts. He inherited the family trade from childhood; his uncle was the noted stone carver Liu Dongyuan. Through more than half a century of practice and exploration, Lu Jinqiao developed a distinctive artistic and creative style of his own. He neither drew designs nor made models, relying instead on his broad artistic cultivation and wealth of experience to conceive each work according to the shape of the material. He could begin carving directly from any part of the stone and produce vivid works that captured both form and spirit, a skill known in the trade as 'having the work inside one's belly' (du li you huo). He also remedied the stiffness that marred the drapery, ribbons, hair, and manes of traditional stone carving, lending his works greater vitality. His works display a flexible, delicate technique, uniting spirit with form in a style that is simple and elegant; 'Lu Jinqiao Stone Carving' has become a brand in its own right, and his Wo Shou Guanyin (Guanyin Seated on a Recumbent Beast), San Da Shi (Three Great Ladies), and Puxian Zuo Bai Xiang (Samantabhadra Seated on a White Elephant) are all regarded as masterpieces of national-treasure rank.
