Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire
Male, of Han ethnicity, born in 1928 in Fuzhou, Fujian Province. National representative bearer of Shoushan Stone Carving, a first-batch national intangible cultural heritage project; a master of Chinese arts and crafts; and a researcher in folk creation at the Chinese National Academy of Arts. Having completed his three-year apprenticeship, he mastered the full range of Shoushan stone-carving techniques and knife work. He was especially adept at such subjects as 'groups of pigs,' 'large baskets of flowers and fruit,' 'immortal cranes,' and 'the twelve zodiac animals,' and his command of the natural color-play of Shoushan stone was considered peerless. By reading the form and color gradations of each Shoushan stone, he could judge and sketch out designs of exquisite fitness and ingenious arrangement, bringing the natural beauty of the stone's color and texture to the fullest expression. In 2009, he published The Complete Works of Masters of Chinese Arts and Crafts: The Feng Jiuhe Volume. His work Han Xiang Yun Yu (Holding Fragrance, Containing Jade) was selected by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications to be issued as one of the 'national name card' postage stamps. Now over eighty years of age, he continues to create every day, and his children and grandchildren have also inherited the stone-carving mantle, carrying the art forward. Representative works include Song He Yan Nian (Pine and Crane for Longevity), San Yang Kai Tai (Three Goats Herald Spring), and Gu Ding Sheng Hui (Ancient Tripod Radiating Splendor), among others.
