Lineage & School of Heritage

At thirteen she was admitted to the training class of the People's Jinju Troupe of Taiyuan City and studied under Guo Shuangxi, whose stage name was Shuixianhua (Narcissus), specialising in the flower female (huadan) role.

Mastery, Signature Works & Repertoire

Female, Han ethnicity, born in February 1941 in Fenyang County, Shanxi Province. She is a National First-Class Actor and an expert entitled to the special government allowance of the State Council. At sixteen she transferred to the Taiyuan Municipal School of Traditional Opera for further study. In 1959 she was transferred to the Youth Troupe of the Shanxi Provincial Jinju Theatre, and later took as her teachers the celebrated Sichuan Opera performer Yang Youhe and the Peking Opera master Shang Xiaoyun; she also received personal instruction from distinguished artists of Jinju, Hanju, Peking Opera and Puju. Skilled at absorbing the strengths of various schools, she commands a broad repertoire and is particularly accomplished in acting technique; in singing she has made many creative breakthroughs in, and applications of, the two-tone (er yin) vocal method of Jinju. Her representative works include Da Jin Zhi (Beating the Princess), Yang Men Nv Jiang (Women Generals of the Yang Family), Xi Rong Gui (Joyous Return in Glory) and Da Shen Gao Miao (Beating the Gods and Accusing the Temple).

Honors & Recognition

National representative bearer of Jinju (Shanxi Opera), a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. She has repeatedly been named a March 8th Red Banner Pacesetter, a model worker and an advanced worker at national and provincial levels, and in 1987 she received the Fourth China Drama Plum Blossom Award. Over several decades, most of the dozens of young actors she has trained and supported have become the artistic mainstays of their theatres and troupes.
