Female, Han ethnicity, born in March 1963 in Jingle County, Shanxi Province. She holds the professional title of National First-Class Actor. In 1974 she entered the Xinzhou School of Culture and Arts, where she first studied the dan role type and later switched to xiaosheng. After graduating she was assigned to the Xinzhou Prefectural Beilu Bangzi Theatre, where she received careful guidance from veteran artists including Jia Guilin (stage name Xiao Dian Deng, Little Electric Lamp), Dong Fu (stage name Shi Zi Hei, Black Lion) and Li Wanlin. She later became a disciple of the Peking opera master Zhao Kunxiang, broadly absorbing the strengths of related genres for her own use. Her basic training is solid, she is equally at home in martial and civil roles, and she gives fine performances as both xiaosheng and qingyi. In singing in particular she has inherited the impassioned, fervent manner of the genre while daring to innovate, and she commands great expressive power. Her representative works include Ba Da Chui (The Eight Great Hammers), Ku Fen (Weeping at the Grave), Hua Long Dian Jing (The Finishing Touch), Lu Bu and Diaochan, Fang Bai Pao (Visiting the White Robe) and Ri Yue Yao (Ballad of Sun and Moon). She has done her utmost to create platforms for young performers and encourages them to gain experience through performance.
Honors & Recognition
National representative bearer of Beilu Bangzi, a third-batch national intangible cultural heritage project. She received the Plum Blossom Award for Chinese Theatre at its fourteenth edition in 1997 and the Wenhua Performance Award at its twelfth edition in 2007, and is a recipient of the National May 1st Labour Medal and an Outstanding Expert of the Ministry of Culture.
